Leadership Coach & Agile Workshop Faculty
I’m inspired by…
potential. Whether it is a human being’s potential, the potential of change in the world, an adventurous trip or a few beads, there is something about the birth of something new.
And I find humility in wise leaders truly inspiring.
The biggest opportunity for today’s leaders is…
looking at the challenges of a world steeped in complexity through a different lens and seeing hidden possibilities. Human beings have evolved to a place where collective wisdom is not only readily available, it is required. Leaders that have the ability to fuse the potential in their people together create radical new futures for everyone.
Things that make me smile include…
the antics of my three pigs, I mean pugs! Watching a kiddies choir, The Farside, teasing people, Whose Line is it Anyway, my Smile Mix on Spotify, and dark humour…
What matters to me…
is being authentic, deep relationships, wine, my friends and family, sushi, music, being an instrument of peace, community, nature, singing, creating, the simplicity of off-road trips in the African bush, being open to new thoughts and experiences. In my professional life what really matters to me is the development of people.
Experience
I believe it is good to reinvent oneself every few years and my career is a testament to that belief. I spent the first part of my career in different roles in Software Development, mostly in vendor teams, then changed direction in my early thirties and spent a few years as academic at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. A move to the UK returned me to the software development world, and a good thing that was, since that is how I was introduced to eXtreme Programming in 1996. I never looked back. Agile opened up a whole new world, one I loved.
I became an Agile mentor in 2005 after a few years inside Agile teams, and then heard about this new role, Agile Coach, in 2009. After some coaching with Agile Coaching Institute (ACI) my interest was peaked and I started my professional coaching studies. I was one of the first Agile coaches in South Africa, working really hard, so started my own company to grow more coaches to help. In our coaching engagements we kept getting stumped beyond the team level, so next I upped my Enterprise game through ACI’s inaugural Enterprise Wizards Bootcamp in 2014. I stopped doing team coaching at that point, focusing on Enterprise Agility, which led to my focus at this point – growing inner agility in leaders at all levels of the organization. Along the way I started teaching and developing Team and Enterprise Coaches and love coaching coaches. This is also what attracted me to Team Catapult – I jumped at the opportunity to join the faculty!
