We’re joined today by guest Mags Ng to explore what to do when your heart says no, but your brain says yes. Mags has worked for EA Games, Zynga and is now the Head of Production at Riot Games. She’s a wife, mother, and life long learner. Her job is to help solve problems, invest in careers, and define what excellence looks like. Mags likes working on the people side of things and growing careers and giving back to the company.

Mags shares a story of her biggest failure, which led to success. The general manager of her team left and she was tapped to take the role. Her gut and heart said don’t do it, but her brain said it would look good on a resume and she should do it. Knowing she didn’t love the job, but taking it anyway gave her the opportunity to learn about her style and what she wanted out of her work life. When you’re in a job that is giving you burn out, she recommends taking a step back and writing out what you love and reflecting on how you can get back to that point.

Mags explains that she had to go through the process of being in a role that wasn’t for her to understand what she really wanted to do. Sometimes you’re in a place that isn’t meant for you and change is hard and scary. The trick is having the courage to take one step outside your box to begin filling in the back between what you want and where you are. Mags then leaves listeners with a message that you need to be authentic in their leadership. Figure out who you are and then give yourself some kindness and grace. When she thinks of a leader, Mags says she thinks of someone who focuses on love and authenticity.
