Jeanie Duncan On Living Your Truth

Episode #4

What this podcast is about

Welcome to Defining Moments of Leadership podcast, hosted by Marsha Acker! We’re joined today by guest Jeanie Duncan to explore what it means to live your truth in your life and leadership. Jeanie is a transformation partner, helping individuals and organizations align with their values, discover their core purpose, and create meaningful impact in the world. She brings over 25 years of experience as an executive, CEO, consultant, and coach, and she offers knowledge and passionate guidance to help generate powerful, effective, strategic change on the personal and organizational levels. Her clients are driven leaders, multi-dimensional teams, and visionary organizations that are ready to jump into their greatness and just need a little help to get there!

Marsha and Jeanie met in 2011 when they participated together in coach training, and Marsha found even then that Jeanie was a fierce force and a model of bravery. Jeanie was shaped to be such a person, in part, through her upbringing and early leadership journey. She grew up working for her parents’ businesses, and developed a sense of leadership as work ethic, drive, and jumping in to do whatever is needed. After college, Jeanie started her own company and spent some time in the nonprofit sector; during this time, the influence of a mentor implanted in her the deep desire to be a compassionate leader running a useful nonprofit. She also grew in her commitment to art, culture, and creativity, seeing them as means by which people can find themselves and using them in her own work to address community issues like homelessness.

Jeanie’s leadership lineage has, in the years since Jeanie and Marsha met, moved her even more into the space of fierce bravery. During the coach training, Jeanie was impressed by a lack of personal fulfillment in her life; this experience was one of many moments in the decades-long process of coming to truly know herself as gay. For years, Jeanie was crippled by fear and not brave enough to claim her sexuality; eventually, though, she found that loving herself and her family meant that she had to claim her truth and stop hiding who she was. Her coming out process has helped her learn to answer her “internal saboteur” with affirmations shared by a mentor, driven her to call others forward into their truth, and even led her to begin working on her forthcoming book, Discovering and Living Your Truth. Before the episode ends with a speed round and Marsha’s final thoughts, Jeanie advises listeners to attend to and trust themselves.
